Bali

Temples, surf beaches and rice terraces on one island

Overview

Bali day tours

Bali sightseeing runs on full-day tours: a private car and driver for IDR 600,000–850,000 ($33–$47) per car, or a boat day to Nusa Penida for IDR 500,000–900,000 ($28–$50) per person. The island has four or five classic routes, and a good trip picks two or three — not all of them.

The enemy here is traffic. Every route looks close on the map; none of them are. Start early, keep stops few, and your day tours stay fun instead of becoming car tours.

How to choose

Trip of 5–6 days? Take exactly three: Ubud circuit, Nusa Penida, and either east Bali (for the temple photos) or Bedugul (for cool air and lakes). That covers Bali's greatest hits with two rest days left.

Trip of 3–4 days? Two tours maximum — Ubud plus Penida. Skip east Bali; the Lempuyang queue alone can eat 2 hours in peak months.

Choose east Bali over Bedugul if photos drive your trip; choose Bedugul with kids or parents — it is a gentler, cooler day with easier walking.

Do not stack tours on consecutive days with small children. Alternate: tour day, pool day, tour day.

Carry cash for entry tickets — most temple and terrace gates are cash-only — plus a sarong, sunscreen and motion-sickness tablets for the winding mountain roads.

The routes are detailed on our sightseeing tours page and the island tours and beaches page; trip-length math lives in the Bali guide.
