Bali

Temples, surf beaches and rice terraces on one island

Overview

Bali island tours and beaches

Bali's most dramatic scenery is not on Bali — it is on Nusa Penida, a 45-minute fast boat away. A full-day Nusa Penida tour costs about IDR 500,000–850,000 ($28–$47) including boat, car and lunch, and it is the single best day trip the island offers.

Bali's own beaches split by coast: wild surf in the west, calm resort water in the east, and white-sand cliff coves in the south. Pick by what you want from the water.

How to choose

Book Nusa Penida if you can handle a long, bumpy day — the views repay it. Prone to seasickness? Take a morning boat (calmer seas) and sit at the back. Skip it with toddlers or anyone with back problems; the island's roads are rough.

Choose Nusa Lembongan for the gentler version: shorter boat, smoother roads, good beach clubs. It is the better pick with young kids or older parents.

For beach-only days, match the coast to your swimmer: Nusa Dua and Sanur for safe swimming, Seminyak for sunset beach clubs, Uluwatu's coves for clear water (mind the tides and stairs).

The Gilis are wonderful but are a separate leg, not a day trip. Only add them on trips of 7+ days.

Pair island days with snorkelling spots or water sports at Tanjung Benoa, and plan the full route with the Bali guide.
