Three to four days. One day for city sights (Magellan's Cross, Fort San Pedro, Temple of Leah), one for Kawasan Falls and canyoneering in the south, and one or two for island hopping around Mactan or a Bohol day trip.

Is swimming with whale sharks in Oslob ethical?

It is controversial. The Oslob operation feeds wild whale sharks, which changes their natural behaviour, and many marine groups advise skipping it. A better option is the sardine run and turtle snorkeling at Moalboal, which involves no feeding.

How do I get to Cebu?

Cebu's Mactan airport is an international gateway with direct flights from Singapore, Hong Kong, Seoul, Tokyo and other regional hubs, so you can skip Manila entirely. From Manila it is a 1.5-hour domestic flight, with departures all day.

Cebu or Boracay — which should I pick?

Cebu for adventure: canyoneering, waterfalls, diving and history. Boracay for a pure beach holiday on one famous stretch of sand. They pair well too — the two are a short domestic flight apart, so many trips do Cebu first and finish on Boracay.

Top things to do in Cebu

Go canyoneering at Kawasan Falls. This is Cebu's signature adventure — a 3-4 hour guided route of jumping, swimming and floating down turquoise canyon pools near Badian, ending at the falls. Tours with gear and guide cost roughly ₱1,500-₱2,500 ($24-$40), plus transport from Cebu City (about 3 hours each way). You need basic fitness but not swimming expertise; life jackets are mandatory.

Snorkel the Moalboal sardine run. Millions of sardines swirl just metres off Panagsama Beach, with sea turtles grazing nearby. It is shore-accessible, cheap and one of the best free-diving sights in Asia.

Island-hop from Mactan. Day tours cover islets like Nalusuan and Caohagan with sandbars and reef stops, usually with a grilled seafood lunch on board. Group tours run about ₱1,500-₱2,500 ($24-$40) per person.

See the city's history. Magellan's Cross, the Basilica del Santo Niño and Fort San Pedro sit within walking distance of each other and cover 500 years of history in a couple of hours. Add the hilltop Temple of Leah and Sirao flower garden for sunset views over the city.

If you have a spare day, the Bohol day trip — Chocolate Hills and tarsiers — is a fast 2-hour ferry away and easy to book as a package.

Best time to visit

December to May is the dry season and the best window, with March to May the hottest and clearest for island trips. June to November brings more rain and the occasional typhoon; tours still run on most days, but seas can turn rough and island hopping gets cancelled at short notice. Canyoneering closes after heavy rain, so keep a buffer day if Kawasan is a must-do.
