Bali

Temples, surf beaches and rice terraces on one island

Overview

Gardens and parks in Bali

Bali's greenest day out is the Bedugul highlands — home to the Bali Botanic Garden, Indonesia's largest, where entry costs just IDR 40,000–60,000 ($2.50–$3.50). Add the lake temple and rice terraces, and green Bali becomes a full-day circuit rather than a single stop.

The highlands sit at 1,300 m, so carry a light jacket — a strange sentence to read about Bali, but true.

How to choose

Do Bedugul as a circuit day with a private driver (around IDR 700,000–1,000,000 / $40–$55 per car): Botanic Garden in the morning, Ulun Danu Beratan temple at midday, Handara Gate on the way out. Add the Treetop park if you have kids — it is well-run.

Choose Tegalalang if you are short on time and based near Ubud; go before 9 am. Choose Jatiluwih if crowds spoil places for you — it absorbs visitors the way Tegalalang cannot.

Tirta Gangga belongs on an east-Bali day with Lempuyang, not a trip of its own.

A caution for the Monkey Forest: it is worth visiting, but hold nothing loose — sunglasses, phones and water bottles are fair game to the monkeys. Skip it with fearful small children.

Timing matters more than tickets in this category. Every spot on this list is at its best before 9:30 am — soft light, cool air, empty paths — and at its worst between 11 am and 2 pm when tour buses arrive.

Combine these with temple routes and driver-day circuits, or start from the Bali guide.
