Bali offers some of Asia's best-value snorkeling: calm coral bays for IDR 300,000–500,000 ($17–$28) per boat trip, and manta rays at Nusa Penida for IDR 700,000–1,100,000 ($40–$60) with fast boat and lunch. You do not need to be a strong swimmer for the easy sites — guides and life jackets are standard.

The island's east and its offshore islands hold all the good water. Kuta and Seminyak have surf, not snorkeling; plan a half-day trip east or a full day out to Penida.

How to choose

First time in a mask? Book Blue Lagoon. It is a 10-minute boat hop from Padangbai jetty, the water is calm, and guides are patient with nervous swimmers.

Want the manta rays? Take the Penida snorkeling tour — but know the trade: Manta Point sits off exposed cliffs and gets swelly. Take a seasickness tablet, and skip it entirely if you panic in choppy water; the mantas are not visible from a boat bench.

Amed and Tulamben suit travellers staying a night or two in east Bali — snorkeling from the beach at dawn, no boat needed, is a quiet joy the day-trippers miss.

Skip Menjangan on a first Bali trip; it is superb but 4 hours from the south. Save it for a return visit or a north-Bali itinerary.
