Ao Nang

Krabi's beach hub — boats to Railay and the four islands

Overview

Things to do in Ao Nang

Ao Nang is the beach town where most Krabi visitors stay — a strip of hotels, restaurants and tour desks facing limestone cliffs. It suits first-time Thailand travellers and families: quieter than Phuket, busier than a hidden island. Come November to April, when the sea is calm and boats run daily. Ao Nang's own beach is fine for a sunset walk, but the real draw is what a short boat ride reaches.

  • The 4-Island tour — Phra Nang Cave beach, Tup, Chicken and Poda islands — by longtail (around ฿700-900 / $20-25) or speedboat (around ฿1,200-1,500 / $35-45), plus a national park fee of roughly ฿400 ($11)
  • Long-tail boat to Railay Beach, walled in by cliffs — about 15 minutes, roughly ฿100 ($3) each way shared
  • Day trip to the Hong Islands for lagoon swimming — around ฿1,200-฿1,600 ($35-$45) with lunch included
  • Sunset seafood dinner on the beachfront road, where a full meal for two runs about ฿500-฿700 ($15-$20)
  • Rock climbing on the limestone cliffs around Railay and Ton Sai — a half-day taster session for beginners costs about ฿1,600-฿2,000 ($45-$55), gear included
  • Diving day trips out to Phi Phi and beyond — a two-dive day for beginners runs roughly ฿3,200-฿4,200 ($90-$120) with equipment

Most visitors give Ao Nang 2-3 days; add a day if diving or climbing is on the list. The boat tours suit everyone, but skip the climbing and diving unless you're a confident swimmer with reasonable fitness — the 4-Island and Hong Islands trips deliver the same scenery with none of the demands.

Getting to Ao Nang and where it fits in your trip

Ao Nang has no airport of its own. The nearest is Krabi International Airport (KBV), about 30-40 minutes away by road, with domestic flights from Bangkok taking around 1.5 hours and costing roughly ฿1,900-฿3,000 ($55-$85) one-way if booked early. Travellers coming from Phuket can skip the flight and take a ferry via the Phi Phi islands instead, around 3-4 hours door to door.

Most people combine Ao Nang with a wider Krabi trip, or pair it with Phuket for beaches plus nightlife — a week split roughly 3 days Ao Nang, 3-4 days Phuket works well. It's a harder add-on to a Bangkok-only trip, since either route needs a flight or a long ferry connection, so most travellers only add Ao Nang once Bangkok isn't the whole trip.
