Krabi

Limestone cliffs, quiet islands, slower days

Overview

Krabi in brief

Krabi is the Thailand you see in wallpapers — grey-green limestone cliffs rising out of flat turquoise sea. It sits across the bay from Phuket but feels a decade quieter: fewer touts, smaller crowds, better prices.

It suits couples, slower travellers, and families with older kids who want beaches without a party scene. Pick Phuket instead if nightlife, shopping and direct flights matter more to you than scenery. The trade-off with Krabi is access — most travellers connect through Bangkok or Phuket, and the town itself is simple, built around longtail boats rather than big infrastructure. The scenery carries the trip.

Top things to do in Krabi

4 Islands tour. Krabi's signature day trip — Phra Nang Cave Beach, Chicken, Tup and Poda islands. Longtail-boat tours with lunch start around ฿550 ($16); speedboats cost more but beat the crowds. Book the sunset version if you want the lagoon light without the midday rush.

Railay Beach. Reachable only by longtail boat from Ao Nang, around ฿100 ($3) each way. Railay West is the swimming beach; Phra Nang Cave Beach around the corner is even better. Rock climbers come from around the world for these cliffs — beginner half-day climbs are easy to book.

Ao Nang. The main tourist strip and the smartest place to stay. Beach, night market, dive shops and every tour desk you need. It's a base more than a sight — sleep here, day-trip everywhere.

Emerald Pool and Krabi Hot Springs. An hour inland: a clear green forest pool plus natural warm-water cascades. Usually sold as one half-day tour. Go early — the pool loses its colour once crowds churn the water.

Tiger Cave Temple (Wat Tham Suea). 1,260 steps to a hilltop Buddha with a huge view. Free, but brutal in midday heat — climb at 7 am or after 4 pm. Skip it if knees are a concern; the view from Railay's own viewpoint is a gentler alternative.

Susan Hoi (Fossil Shell Beach). About 15 km from Krabi Town: flat slabs of fossilised shells, laid down roughly 75 million years ago and fused into rock at the shoreline. Free to enter. It's a quick, offbeat stop if you have a car or scooter — skip it if you're short on days, since the beaches and islands come first.

Phi Phi Islands from Krabi. The same famous islands you can reach from Phuket, roughly the same boat time. If you're doing both provinces, take the tour from whichever side has better weather that day.

Where to stay in Krabi

Ao Nang is the right answer for most first trips. Every tour leaves from here, the beach, restaurants and night market are walkable, and hotels cover every budget. Railay is the splurge — no roads, cliffs on three sides, and real quiet once the last day-tripper boats leave. One night there is worth planning around.

Krabi Town is cheaper and more local, but it's a river town, not a beach — you'll ride 30-40 minutes to the sand every day. It only makes sense for a night before an early flight. Klong Muang and Tubkaek, north of Ao Nang, hold the quiet resort strips: good for honeymoons, and dull without a hotel pool you love.

If you're choosing blind, book Ao Nang and spend the money you saved on one night at Railay.

Krabi with kids

Krabi works with kids — the trick is choosing the right boats. The 4 Islands trip is the family one: short hops and shallow beaches, with Poda Island's calm water the easiest for small kids. Take the speedboat version; longtails are slower, wetter and shadeless at midday. Skip the Phi Phi speedboat with under-6s — it pounds across open sea for over an hour each way. Railay is the easy win instead: 10–15 minutes from Ao Nang, and Railay West is shallow and calm in season.

Check every child has a life jacket that actually fits before the boat leaves; operators carry them but rarely offer small sizes unless asked. Stay in Ao Nang for the walkable beachfront and night market, or Klong Muang for quieter resort pools. Beat the heat the standard way: boats in the morning, pool after lunch, night market for dinner.

Best time to visit Krabi

November to March is the season — dry, around 31°C, and flat seas, which matter because everything good in Krabi involves a boat. December and January are busiest; book Railay-area hotels a couple of months ahead.

May to October is monsoon. Island tours run on good days and cancel on rough ones, and Railay boats can get bumpy. Hotels often cost noticeably less — sometimes by a third or more — so it works for a flexible, budget trip. Just don't build the itinerary around one fixed boat day.

Getting around Krabi

White songthaews run between Krabi Town and Ao Nang for around ฿50 ($1.50). Within Ao Nang everything is walkable. Grab works, but there are fewer cars on the road than in Phuket — allow extra time for airport runs.

Boats are the real transport. Longtails to Railay leave once they fill (around 8 people), roughly every 20 minutes in season. After dark, boats stop — plan Railay evenings around the last boat back, usually around 6 pm.

Airport transfers are simple: shared shuttles to Ao Nang run around ฿150 ($4.50) per person, and a private taxi is roughly ฿600 ($17). Book the shuttle at the arrivals counter — no need to arrange it ahead.

What things cost in Krabi

Krabi is cheaper than Phuket once you've arrived. Rough guide:

  • Longtail boat to Railay: around ฿100 ($3) each way
  • Songthaew, Krabi Town to Ao Nang: around ฿50 ($1.50)
  • 4 Islands longtail tour with lunch: from ฿550 ($16)
  • Phi Phi speedboat trip: roughly ฿1,200-฿1,800 ($35-$52)
  • Local meal in Ao Nang: ฿80-฿150 ($2.50-$4.50)
  • Thai massage, 1 hour: ฿300-฿400 ($9-$12)
  • Mid-range hotel double: roughly ฿1,200-฿2,500 ($35-$72) per night

National park fees are the extra to remember — several islands and the Emerald Pool charge separate entry, typically ฿200-฿400 ($6-$12), payable in cash on the spot. A comfortable mid-range day runs around ฿2,500-฿3,500 ($70-$100) per person including one boat tour.

Where Krabi fits in your trip

Krabi pairs naturally with Phuket: 3 days each, linked by a road or ferry transfer that runs around 2 to 3 hours. Do Phuket's islands and nightlife first, then wind down in Krabi.

Most international flights connect through Bangkok or Phuket; many travellers add a couple of days in Bangkok either before or after Krabi. If your dates fall in Krabi's monsoon, look at Koh Samui on the gulf coast, which stays drier from June to August. Full route ideas are in the Thailand guide.
