Overview
Nagoya is Japan's fourth-largest city and its motor-industry capital, and it sits right on the bullet-train line between Tokyo and Osaka. Two attractions make it worth stopping: Ghibli Park and Legoland Japan — neither exists anywhere else in the country.
It suits families and anime fans best. Pure sightseers usually give it half a day to one day. Weather is best March to May and October to November, like the rest of central Japan.
Ghibli Park. Life-size worlds from Totoro, Howl's Moving Castle and other Studio Ghibli films, set in a large park in Nagakute, about 45 minutes from Nagoya Station by train. Tickets are advance-only for a fixed date, from around ¥3,500 ($22), and popular dates sell out weeks ahead — book before you fix your route.
Legoland Japan. Japan's only Legoland, best for kids under 12. One-day tickets start from around ¥4,500 ($28) and are cheaper booked online in advance than at the gate.
Nagoya Castle. Famous for the golden shachihoko statues on its roof. Grounds entry is around ¥500 ($3). Be aware the main keep's interior is closed for rebuilding — go for the grounds and the beautifully restored Honmaru Palace, not the tower.
SCMAGLEV & Railway Park. Retired bullet trains and maglev prototypes you can walk through, near the port. Entry is around ¥1,000 ($6) and train-mad kids can lose half a day here.
Eat the local classics. Nagoya has its own food identity: miso katsu (pork cutlet in dark miso sauce) and hitsumabushi, grilled eel eaten three ways.
Nagoya is a Shinkansen stop, so getting there is the easy part: about 1 hour 40 minutes from Tokyo for around ¥11,000 ($68), and about 50 minutes from Osaka for around ¥6,700 ($41). The Japan Rail Pass covers the route on Hikari trains.
