Lombok

Bali's quieter neighbour — Gili islands, surf beaches and Rinjani

Overview

Why visit Lombok

Lombok is what many travellers hoped Bali would be: surf beaches without the crowds, turquoise island trips without the traffic, and one massive volcano — Rinjani — rising over it all. It sits just east of Bali, 30 minutes by air, with the three famous Gili islands floating off its northwest coast.

Come here after (or instead of) Bali's busy south for a slower, cheaper beach chapter of an Indonesia trip.

Top things to do in Lombok

Island-hop the Gilis. Gili Trawangan, Gili Air and Gili Meno are tiny, car-free islands ringed by white sand and reef. Snorkeling with sea turtles off Gili Meno is nearly guaranteed; day trips with stops at all three, including boat and gear, cost around Rp 450,000-750,000 ($25-$40). Bicycles and horse carts are the only transport.

Base yourself in Kuta, Lombok. (Not Bali's Kuta.) The south-coast town fronts a string of gorgeous bays — Tanjung Aan's twin white crescents, Selong Belanak's beginner-friendly surf, Mawun's quiet cove. Rent a scooter or hire a driver and beach-hop; surf lessons run about Rp 350,000-500,000 ($20-$28).

Chase the Benang Stokel and Tiu Kelep waterfalls. The jungle falls on Rinjani's slopes are Lombok's best half-day inland — Tiu Kelep's multi-stream curtain near Senaru is the showpiece, a wet 45-minute walk from the road.

Take on Mount Rinjani — or just its viewpoints. Indonesia's second-highest volcano offers a legendary 2-3 day trek around a crater lake. If that is too much, sunrise hill viewpoints at Sembalun give the postcard without the climb.

Also worth an hour: Sade village, a traditional Sasak settlement, and the southern viewpoint at Merese Hill for sunset over Tanjung Aan.

Best time to visit

May to September is the dry season — sunny days, calm seas for Gili crossings and prime surf on the south coast. October to December gets hotter and stickier with building showers, and January to March is the wet heart of monsoon, when Rinjani's trails close and boat rides turn bumpy. April is a good-value shoulder month as the rain tails off.

Pair Lombok with Bali — the classic combination is Bali's temples and Ubud first, then the Gilis or Kuta Lombok to finish. Flights also connect via Jakarta if you are starting from the capital. See the Indonesia guide for visa rules and route ideas.
