The Gold Coast is Australia's playground: more major theme parks than anywhere else in the country, 50 km of surf beaches, and a high-rise skyline at Surfers Paradise. If your Australia trip includes kids or teenagers, this is the stop they will remember.

Do the theme parks. Warner Bros. Movie World brings DC coasters and studio-style shows; Sea World mixes marine rides with dolphins, seals and polar animals; Dreamworld has the biggest ride list plus tigers and an Aussie wildlife section; Wet'n'Wild is the water-park pick for hot days. Single-park entry starts around A$115-130 ($80-$90), so a multi-park pass is the smart buy if you plan two or more parks — and booking online beats gate prices.
Go up SkyPoint. The observation deck on level 77 of the Q1 tower gives a full sweep of the coastline — clearest views in the morning.
Beach time at Surfers Paradise and Burleigh Heads. Surfers Paradise has the famous sign and the busiest sand; Burleigh Heads, 15 minutes south, has a headland walk and a more local feel. Beginner surf lessons run daily on both.
Meet the animals at Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary. Koala photos, kangaroo feeding and the morning lorikeet feeding are the classic Australia moments — easier and cheaper here than in Sydney.
If you have a spare day, the hinterland behind the coast hides Springbrook and Tamborine Mountain: waterfalls, a treetop skywalk and, after dark, glow-worm caves.
April to October is the sweet spot — dry, sunny days around 20–25°C, ideal for parks and beaches. November to March is hotter and stickier with afternoon storms, but the sea is at its warmest and Wet'n'Wild makes more sense then. Avoid mid-December to January if you dislike crowds — it is Australia's school-holiday peak, and theme-park queues double.
Getting around is simple: the G:link tram runs the length of the main beach strip, theme parks lay on shuttle buses from the big hotels, and ride-hailing covers the rest. Pair the Gold Coast with Brisbane, an hour north, and Cairns for the Great Barrier Reef — the three together make a complete Queensland route.
Good to know
Movie World for thrill rides and superhero coasters, Sea World for marine animals with younger kids, and Dreamworld for the biggest mix of rides plus an on-site wildlife park. If you have one day, most first-timers pick Movie World; multi-park passes make two or three parks much cheaper per day.
Three to four days: one or two for theme parks, one for the beaches and SkyPoint, and one for a koala park or the rainforest hinterland. Theme-park fans can fill a week.
Gold Coast airport (OOL) at Coolangatta has direct domestic flights and some international routes. Otherwise fly into Brisbane — bigger and often cheaper — and take the roughly 1.5-hour Airtrain-plus-tram or a door-to-door transfer south.
