Ubud

Bali's jungle heart: rice terraces, temples and monkeys

Overview

Ubud in brief

Ubud is Bali's cultural capital — a jungle town of rice terraces, stone temples and yoga studios, 1.5-2 hours from the airport. If beaches are only half the reason you're going to Bali, Ubud is the other half.

It works best as the second base of a Bali trip: 2-3 nights here after the beach leg. Hotels range from Rp 450,000 ($25) guesthouses to jungle pool villas, and the town centre is walkable.

Top things to do in Ubud

Sacred Monkey Forest. A temple forest with about a thousand long-tailed macaques. Entry around Rp 80,000 ($4.50). The monkeys are bold — no food in bags, no loose sunglasses. An hour is enough.

Tegallalang rice terraces. The stepped, palm-lined terraces from every Bali reel. Go at 7-8am for soft light and no crowds. Entry and small "donation" gates add up to Rp 25,000-50,000 ($1.50-$3). The famous jungle swings cost Rp 150,000-400,000 ($8-$22) extra — fun, but purely for photos.

Campuhan Ridge Walk. A free, easy 2-km ridge path over green valleys, starting near the town centre. Do it at sunrise; it is fully exposed and hot after 9am.

Tirta Empul water temple. Bali's holy spring temple, where Hindus bathe in the purification pools. Entry about Rp 75,000 ($4), sarong included. Go early — tour buses arrive from mid-morning.

A waterfall stop. Tegenungan is the closest and busiest; Tibumana and Kanto Lampo are smaller and prettier. Entry Rp 20,000-50,000 ($1-$3) each. Pick one, go early, carry a change of clothes.

Ubud Palace and the Art Market. Both sit on the main crossroads in town. The palace is small and free; the market across the road sells sarongs, baskets and paintings — bargain to about half the first price. Evening legong dance shows at the palace cost around Rp 100,000 ($5.50).

Ayung River rafting. A 2-hour white-water run through jungle gorges — mild rapids, fine for beginners and kids above about 7. Around Rp 400,000-550,000 ($22-$30) per person with lunch.

Best time to visit Ubud

April to October is the dry season and the best time for Ubud's outdoor sights. Mornings are the golden hours everywhere here — terraces, ridge walk and waterfalls are crowded and harsh-lit by 10am.

Ubud sits higher than the coast, so evenings are cooler and rain is a little more frequent year-round. In the wet season (November-March) plan temples and cafes for afternoons and keep outdoor plans for mornings.

Getting around Ubud

The town centre is walkable, and Gojek/Grab bikes cover short hops for under Rp 25,000 ($1.50). For the terraces-temple-waterfall circuit, hire a car with driver for the day — about Rp 600,000-800,000 ($33-$44) — since the sights sit 20-40 minutes apart in different directions.

Note: some central Ubud zones restrict app-taxi pickups. Your hotel can arrange a local driver at a similar price.

Where Ubud fits in your trip

Ubud is half of the classic Bali split: 3 nights beach (Kuta, Seminyak or Uluwatu) + 2-3 nights Ubud. Doing Ubud as a one-day trip from the beach means 3-4 hours in the car — possible, but you will only skim it.

Nusa Penida and the Gili boats leave from the coast, not Ubud — schedule island trips on your beach days. If temples are your main interest, note that Borobudur and Prambanan are a one-hour flight away in Yogyakarta. See the main Bali guide for how the areas connect, or the Indonesia guide for visa rules and route ideas.
