Meet quokkas on Rottnest Island. The number-one reason travellers come to Perth. Ferries run from Fremantle and the city to this car-free island, where you cycle between 60 beaches and photograph the famously smiling quokkas. Book the ferry ahead in spring and summer.
Walk Kings Park. One of the world's largest inner-city parks, with a treetop bridge, war memorial and the best free skyline view in Australia. In September and October the wildflower displays are a show of their own.
Spend a half-day in Fremantle. Perth's port town keeps its 19th-century streets, the famous weekend Fremantle Markets, and the UNESCO-listed Fremantle Prison — the tunnel and torchlight tours are the memorable ones.
Cuddle up to wildlife at Caversham. In Whiteman Park, Caversham Wildlife Park offers koala photos, kangaroo feeding and wombat encounters at gentler prices than east-coast parks. Combine it with the Swan Valley, Perth's wine and chocolate strip, 25 minutes from the city.
Hit the beaches. Cottesloe is the classic sunset swim; Scarborough has the surf and the esplanade. Remember the Indian Ocean here is refreshing rather than warm.
With an extra day, the Pinnacles Desert day trip north shows thousands of limestone spires rising from yellow sand — often bundled with sandboarding and a wildlife stop.
September to November is Perth at its best — warm, dry days and Western Australia's famous wildflower season. March to May is the other sweet spot, with summer heat gone and the sea still warm. December to February is hot (often 35°C+) but reliably sunny — beach weather, if you plan outdoor walks for mornings. June to August is mild and greener, with some rain; it is the cheapest season.
Perth stands alone well, but if you are continuing east, Melbourne and Sydney are 4–5 hour flights — treat Western Australia as its own trip rather than a quick stop.
