Overview
Things to do in Kanchanaburi
Kanchanaburi is a river town 2.5-3 hours west of Bangkok, known for the Bridge on the River Kwai and the seven-tier Erawan Falls. It suits travellers who want history and jungle scenery on a Bangkok trip without flying anywhere. November to February is the comfortable season, when cooler air makes the walk up to Erawan's higher pools easier. Most visitors see it as a single day trip or a one-night stop, not a standalone base for a longer stay.
- Walk the Bridge on the River Kwai (free) and visit the Thailand-Burma Railway Centre museum, entry around ฿100-฿150 ($3-$4)
- Ride the Death Railway train over the wooden Wampo Viaduct — a one-way ticket costs roughly ฿100 ($3)
- Swim the blue-green tiers of Erawan Falls — park entry is around ฿300 ($9) for foreign visitors, and the hike to tier 7 takes about an hour
- Sleep on a floating raft-house on the River Kwai, with rooms starting around ฿900-฿1,200 ($25-$35) a night
- Visit Hellfire Pass Memorial Museum, a preserved cutting on the original railway line with a free museum and audio guide, about an hour further from town — worth it for anyone who found the bridge and the war museum moving
