Kuala Lumpur

Big-city Malaysia: twin towers, temples and street food

Overview

Temples in Kuala Lumpur

Kuala Lumpur's temples are among its best sights — and most of them are free to enter. The star is Batu Caves, home to a 42-metre gold statue of Lord Murugan, the tallest of its kind in the world. Budget RM0–RM140 ($0–$34) per person: the temples themselves cost nothing, and only guided tours cost money.

KL's mix is unique: Hindu temples, Chinese temples and mosques sit within minutes of each other. You can see the top three or four sites in one relaxed day.

How to choose

If you do only one thing, do Batu Caves — go early, before 9 am, to beat the heat and the tour buses. The 272 steps are easier than they look, but skip them if anyone in your group has knee trouble; you can still see the statue and the base temples.

Do Thean Hou at sunset for the best photos. It is a short Grab ride from the centre and rarely crowded on weekdays.

Take a guided tour only if you want history explained and hotel pickup handled. If you are comfortable with trains and Grab, doing it yourself costs almost nothing.

Skip temple-hopping on Thaipusam unless the festival itself is why you came — the crowds make normal sightseeing impossible.

Pair this with a Kuala Lumpur city tour to cover the colonial buildings too, or see the full Kuala Lumpur guide for planning basics.
