Genting Highlands

Genting Highlands packs Malaysia's biggest theme park, a famous cable car and cool mountain weather into one hilltop, just an hour from Kuala Lumpur. At about 1,800 m above sea level, it stays 15–25°C all year — a welcome break from the heat of KL.

Almost everything sits inside one connected resort area: Genting SkyWorlds outdoor theme park, Skytropolis indoor park, two big malls and the casino. That makes it an easy add-on to any Malaysia trip — most visitors come as a day trip or one-night stay from Kuala Lumpur.

Genting SkyWorlds is the main draw — a movie-themed outdoor park with 26 rides across nine worlds, including big coasters and family rides. Plan 5–6 hours here. Adult entry runs around RM 170 ($42); book online to skip the ticket counter queue, and check the ride list first if you are chasing thrill rides — the balance leans family.

Awana SkyWay cable car is the second must-do. The 10-minute ride glides over rainforest to the hilltop, and glass-floor gondolas cost a little extra. It doubles as your transport up, so take it instead of driving the winding road.

Skytropolis Indoor Theme Park works well for families with young kids or as a rainy-evening backup — it is fully indoors with about 20 rides. SkyAvenue and First World Plaza malls fill the gaps with shopping, arcade games and food courts. On the way up or down, many visitors stop at Chin Swee Caves Temple, a nine-storey pagoda with valley views, reachable by a mid-station on the cable car.

Skip the casino if you are travelling with family; note that entry is for adults 21+ and there is a dress code.
