Nikko

Nikko is the classic day trip from Tokyo: a shrine town in forested mountains about two hours north by train. Its centrepiece, Toshogu Shrine, is the gilded mausoleum of the shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu — carved, colourful and unlike anything in Kyoto. Around it sit waterfalls, a caldera lake and one of Japan's most photographed bridges.

It suits travellers who want temples and mountain scenery without changing hotels. Autumn (mid-October to early November) is peak season for the leaves; start early whichever month you come.

Toshogu Shrine. The lavish, gold-carved shrine complex is the reason Nikko exists on itineraries. Entry is around ¥1,600 ($10). Look for the famous carvings: the sleeping cat and the "see no evil" three monkeys.

Kegon Falls. A 97-metre drop beside Lake Chuzenji. The viewing platform at the top is free; the lift down to the base viewpoint costs around ¥600 ($4) and is worth it after rain.

Shinkyo Bridge. The red sacred bridge at the town entrance. The photo from the road costs nothing and is the shot everyone wants.

Irohazaka and Lake Chuzenji. The bus from Nikko station climbs 48 hairpin bends to the lake in about 50 minutes. In late October the whole valley turns red and gold — and traffic crawls, so go early.
