Overview
Brisbane is Queensland's easy-going capital — a sunny river city where you can hold a koala in the morning, swim at an inner-city beach after lunch and take in the skyline from a mountain lookout by evening. It is also the natural gateway to the Gold Coast's theme parks, an hour south.
Most itineraries give Brisbane two days on the way to the Gold Coast or Cairns, and that is about right.

Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary is the star: the world's oldest and largest koala sanctuary, home to around 130 of them, plus kangaroo paddocks where you hand-feed the mob. Queensland permits held-koala photos, which Sydney and Melbourne do not — if that picture is on your list, take it here. The boat cruise up the Brisbane River to Lone Pine turns the visit into a half-day outing.
South Bank is the city's playground — riverside gardens, the flower-covered arbour walk, and Streets Beach, a free man-made lagoon with real sand facing the skyline. The Queensland Museum and modern-art gallery (GOMA) sit at its edge, both free for general entry.
See the city from up high. The Wheel of Brisbane at South Bank does the easy version; the Story Bridge Adventure Climb does the thrilling one; and Mt Coot-tha lookout gives the free sunset panorama over the city.
Cruise the river. CityCat ferries are ordinary public transport, which makes them the cheapest sightseeing in Brisbane — ride the full loop past the cliffs and under Story Bridge for under A$5 ($3.50).
With an extra day, choose between Moreton Island (sand-dune tobogganing, wreck snorkeling) and Australia Zoo, the Irwin family's park, about an hour north.
Brisbane Airport has direct flights from most Australian cities and several Asian hubs, and the Airtrain reaches the city centre in about 20 minutes. In town, trains, buses and CityCat ferries share one fare system — tap on and off with any contactless bank card. For the Gold Coast, take the train (about 1.5 hours); for Australia Zoo or Moreton Island, book a tour with hotel pickup unless you rent a car.
April to October is the prime window — dry, sunny and 20–26°C, perfect for the outdoor city Brisbane is. November to March is hotter and stickier with afternoon storms, though nothing really closes; Streets Beach is at its best then. Brisbane claims around 280 sunny days a year, so weather rarely spoils a plan.
Pair Brisbane with the Gold Coast for theme parks — an easy train ride — and Cairns for the Great Barrier Reef, a 2.5-hour flight north.

Yes — Queensland is one of the few Australian states that allows it. Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary offers held-koala photos for an extra fee on top of entry, which is around A$50 ($35); prices change, so check when you book. It is the classic Brisbane experience and the main reason animal lovers stop here.

As a 2-day stop, yes — mainly for the koala sanctuary, the warm climate and its role as the gateway to the Gold Coast and the reef. If your Australia trip is short, prioritise Sydney and pair Brisbane with Gold Coast theme parks rather than treating it as a headline city.
Trains run from Brisbane's city stations to the Gold Coast in about 1.5 hours, with a tram connection to Surfers Paradise. Driving takes about an hour. It is easy to base in one city and day-trip to the other.
