Bangkok

Temples by day, night markets after dark

Overview

Bangkok nightlife: what to expect

Bangkok after dark offers more range for less money than almost any city on earth: cheap street food, glittering 60th-floor sky bars, world-famous cabaret shows, and night markets that swallow whole evenings. You can do a different kind of night every night.

Budget ฿500-฿4,000 ($14-$115) per person per evening, depending on how high above street level you drink.

How to choose

Split your evenings: one rooftop night, one night market, one show or cruise. The rooftop is worth doing exactly once — the view justifies one expensive drink, but three rounds up there equals a full day's budget elsewhere.

Skip the go-go bar districts (Nana, Soi Cowboy) unless you know exactly what they are — many first-time visitors wander in expecting regular pubs and feel uncomfortable. Bangkok's better night out is a market like Jodd Fairs: grilled seafood, live music, and vegetarian stalls if you ask around.

Vegetarians manage well at night markets — look for "jay" (เจ) signs meaning pure veg, and Sukhumvit has plenty of international restaurants if you want familiar flavours. Combine a show night with the dinner cruise, or start the evening with a tuk-tuk food tour.
