Melaka (Malacca) is where Malaysia's history is stacked in plain sight: a Portuguese fort gate, a red Dutch square, Chinese clan temples and British-era shophouses, all within one walkable UNESCO-listed old town. It sits two hours south of Kuala Lumpur, which makes it the easiest heritage escape in the country.
Come for the buildings, stay for the food — and if you can, time it for a weekend, when Jonker Street turns into one of Malaysia's best night markets.

Jonker Street night market (Friday–Sunday evenings) is the highlight: hundreds of stalls with street food, souvenirs and live stage performances running down the old town's main street. Go hungry.
Walk the Dutch Square and St Paul's Hill. The crimson Christ Church and Stadthuys make the classic photo, and a short climb behind them leads to the ruins of St Paul's Church with views over the strait. At the bottom stands A Famosa (Porta de Santiago) — the small stone gate that is nearly all that remains of the 1511 Portuguese fortress. All of this is free and fits in two hours.
Cruise the Melaka River. The 45-minute boat loop glides past mural-covered shophouses and old godowns, prettiest after dark when the banks light up. Tickets are around RM 30 ($7), and the jetties sit right by the Dutch Square.
Step into a Peranakan mansion. The Baba & Nyonya Heritage Museum shows the gilded world of the Straits Chinese; nearby, Cheng Hoon Teng (Malaysia's oldest Chinese temple), Kampung Kling Mosque and a Hindu temple share one street — locals call it Harmony Street.
For a skyline view, the Shore Sky Tower observation deck looks over the whole old town, and the curious rotating Taming Sari Tower does a budget version. Skip the gaudy trishaws unless the kids insist — agree the price first.
Melaka has no airport with useful connections — everyone comes by road. From Kuala Lumpur it is a 2-hour bus or drive; from Singapore allow around 4 hours plus the border queue, which is why many travellers slot Melaka between the two cities rather than day-tripping from either.
Inside the old town you will not need transport at all: the core sights sit within a 1.5 km walk, with Grab covering anything further. Hotels inside the heritage core cost a little more than those across the river, but being able to walk home from the night market is worth it.
Pair Melaka with Kuala Lumpur as an overnight or day trip, stop halfway on a KL–Singapore overland route, or continue south to Johor Bahru for LEGOLAND before crossing the border.

By road — about 2 hours. Buses leave KL's TBS terminal every 30 minutes or so for around RM 10–20 ($2.50–$5) one way, arriving at Melaka Sentral, a short Grab ride from the old town. Day tours from KL are the no-planning option.
A day trip covers the fort, the Dutch Square and the museums. But Melaka is best on a weekend evening when the Jonker Street night market runs — if you can, stay one night on a Friday or Saturday and return the next day.

Its 500-year layer cake of history — Portuguese fort walls, a Dutch town square, Chinese temples and Peranakan mansions earned it UNESCO World Heritage status in 2008. It is also a food city: Nyonya laksa, chicken rice balls and cendol.
Manageable. Dedicated vegetarian restaurants sit near the old town, and cendol (the iced coconut-jaggery dessert) is veg. Many famous local dishes are meat-based, so veg travellers should seek out those restaurants rather than the hawker rows.
