Kuala Lumpur

Big-city Malaysia: twin towers, temples and street food

Overview

Beaches near Kuala Lumpur

Honest answer first: Kuala Lumpur has no beach. It is an inland city, about an hour from the coast. But you have real options — from a quick trip to Port Dickson to a short flight to Langkawi, one of Asia's best-value island destinations. Budget anywhere from around RM80 ($20) for a Port Dickson day trip to RM900+ ($220+) for a two-night Langkawi add-on.

Most visitors pair 2-3 days in KL with 2-3 days at a beach. This page helps you pick which beach.

How to choose

If beaches matter to your trip, fly to Langkawi. Do not judge Malaysian beaches by Port Dickson. Langkawi adds roughly RM500-RM900 ($125-$220) per person for flights and two hotel nights, and it is worth every ringgit.

Choose Port Dickson only when you have half a day spare and kids who just want sand and a pool. Book a hotel day-pass rather than swimming at the public beach.

Skip the east-coast islands (Redang, Perhentian) between November and February — the northeast monsoon shuts most boats and resorts in those months. Langkawi sits on the west coast and stays open year-round, with the driest weather usually from December to March.
