For over 138 years, the Peak Tram has been Hong Kong’s most stylish commute. Opened in 1888 as the first cable funicular in Asia, this emerald-green carriage has carried everyone from colonial governors to Hollywood stars — and now, you.
The journey from Central to Victoria Peak is only 1.4 kilometers, but it’s 1.4 kilometers that defy gravity. At its steepest, the tram climbs at a 25.7-degree angle — so steep that the buildings outside your window appear to be leaning backwards . The sixth-generation tram, introduced in 2022, features panoramic floor-to-ceiling windows and a glass roof, turning the 6-minute ascent into a cinematic time-lapse: skyscrapers shrink, the harbour widens, and suddenly you‘re above it all .
But the tram is only half the story. At the summit, the凌霄閣 (Peak Tower) — shaped like a gigantic bowl — houses the Sky Terrace 428. At 428 meters above sea level, it’s the highest 360° viewing platform in Hong Kong . From here, Victoria Harbour stretches before you like a living postcard: junks and Star Ferries tracing silver lines across the water, the forest of towers on Hong Kong Island, and the peaks of Kowloon beyond.
The view changes with every hour. Come at sunset, and watch the city shift from gold to sapphire to a million points of light. Stay for the night, and you‘ll understand why the “Night View of Victoria Harbour” has been voted one of the world’s top three city skylines . The Peak isn‘t just a tourist attraction — it’s Hong Kong’s living room, and everyone’s invited.
