Book the evening desert safari — it is non-negotiable for a first Dubai trip, and the standard shared version is good. Upgrade to a premium camp only if crowds and buffet-line dinners spoil the mood for you; the dunes and sunset are identical at every price point.
Skip the overnight version unless you specifically want the stars and sunrise — dinner-to-breakfast in a desert camp sounds romantic but involves basic bedding and an early, warm morning. Most travellers get 90% of the magic from the evening trip.
The honest advice on operators: the AED 60-70 ($16-$19) cut-price safaris exist, and they cut exactly what you would guess — vehicle quality, camp hygiene, and time in the dunes. Yes — Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary, ten minutes from Downtown, has free viewing hides where hundreds of greater flamingos gather. Winter (roughly October to March) is flamingo season; hides open daytime hours, so check timings before you go. It is one of Dubai's best free experiences.
